Birkbeck unveils new student lounges to enhance campus life
Designed with students in mind, the new lounges at Birkbeck Central provide a welcoming environment to connect, relax, and thrive.

Birkbeck officially launched its new student spaces in Birkbeck Central on 21 May, with a celebratory event attended by staff and students. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sally Wheeler and Dan Xuereb, Director of Estates and Facilities, spoke at the event, highlighting the importance of these new spaces in enhancing the student experience and creating a student-centred campus.
The vibrant new lounges are designed to provide dynamic social and study environments where students can connect, collaborate, and unwind outside the classroom. These spaces reflect Birkbeck’s ongoing commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive campus for all.
The development includes a café and a number of social learning areas all of which are expected to have a positive impact on student life. With a capacity of over 300, the new facilities will serve as a valuable addition to Birkbeck’s estate.
Professor Sally Wheeler, Vice-Chancellor of Birkbeck, University of London said: “These new lounges will enable our students to connect, engage, and participate both inside and outside the classroom. They will help students make the most of their time with us. Our Bloomsbury campus and most of our facilities are open and accessible to all. As we hold some of our classes in the evenings, students from other institutions will also benefit from using these newly created learning spaces during the day.”
The opening of the student lounges marks an exciting step forward in Birkbeck’s mission to support its diverse and vibrant student community.
